He is a knowledgeable professional with significant achievements in managing complex projects in a variety of industries both in Poland and in other locations in Central and Eastern Europe, including Russia, Serbia and Lithuania. By regularly acting as project director, he is able to guide customer expectations and assumes full responsibility for achieving the objectives of the project.

Krzysztof Szymczyk is the company's sales and development director in the field of Lorien's operational activities in Poland and Central Europe. He is a qualified industrial automation engineer and a graduate of postgraduate studies in marketing and management.

He has 25 years of experience in working in international companies that had their own branches in Poland and was responsible for sales and operational management. In addition to activities related to investments in Poland, he also managed sales structures in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States. He has worked mainly with international corporate clients with headquarters in Europe, North America and Asia.

Thanks to these experiences, he understands and respects the ethics of various cultures and economic environments very well.

W toku swojej kariery zawodowej były odpowiedzialny za sprzedaż urządzeń przemysłowych albo złożonych projektów typu EPC, głównie w przemyśle spożywczym, chemicznym i gospodarce wodnej. Zrealizowane przedsięwzięcia wiązały się głównie z rozwiązaniami automatyki przemysłowej, technologiami ochrony środowiska, instalacjami do wytwarzania energii cieplnej oraz kompletnymi liniami technologicznymi.

Krzysztof is a nominated, external technical expert of the Ministry of Environment Protection, representing Poland as an associate member of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission in Seville, Spain. Participated, among others in the ongoing works on the amendment of the EU Directive on industrial emissions (IED) in the field of emission limits and revision of the best available techniques (BAT) in the part of the use of organic solvents in the industry.

Maciej Król is an experienced construction engineer and is the Director of Construction Projects. At the Wrocław office, Lorien manages a team of engineers involved in the design and management of building structures and facility installations.

Maciej Mielnik

Maciej Mielnik is the Director of Process Projects. In the Wrocław office, Lorien manages a team of engineers involved in the design and implementation of process installation projects.

Maciej jest wykwalifikowanym inżynierem procesu i kierownikiem projektu, który sprawuje wiodącą rolę w projektowaniu procesów technologicznych, zarządzaniu realizacją, testami, uruchomieniami oraz walidacją szerokiego zakresu projektów związanych z procesami produkcji żywności, napojów, wyrobów mleczarskich, wyrobów cukierniczych i przekąsek jak również środków do higieny jamy ustnej, chemii gospodarczej i kosmetyków.

Maciej posiada dogłębną wiedzę specjalistyczną w zakresie projektowania higienicznych instalacji procesowych, instalacji mediów, przesyłu, obróbki termicznej surowców i półproduktów jak również pakowania i integracji maszyn pakujących.

He gained his experience in Poland and Great Britain. They cover a wide range of engineering activities from the development of feasibility studies to the stage of project implementation, in which he advised clients on how to achieve their business goals and supported them in making important decisions. Most of the projects that Maciej implemented required appropriate design and active schedule management techniques, including minimizing the activity of object-oriented contractors and related production interruptions.

Maciej is a member of IChemE - Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Keegan is a Director at Lorien Engineering Solutions and leads our African business unit which is positioned as the hub for our growth plans into Sub-Saharan Africa. Keegan's experience and expertise along with his knowledge of operating within the region makes him the ideal person to lead our growth strategy in Africa.

Keegan's main responsibilities as BU Director are:

  • Business Development & Growth within Africa.
  • Operations Management (Resourcing, Cost & People Management, Business strategy and organizational setup).
  • Project / Program Management.
  • Technical Consulting.

He has extensive operations experience working at a multinational FMCG market leader (SABMiller/ABInbev) over 18 years and 10 of those years at executive management level. All his roles have been turnaround in nature and he is skilled at stabilising and growing operations performance.

He is extremely results orientated as per his career achievements. He has a continuous improvement approach to operations and has gained Six Sigma Green Belt & Team Leader accreditation. He is a passionate, engaging and intuitive leader with a completely entrepreneurial approach to work. He is passionate about partnering and growing businesses with an appetite for success with people at its core.

His core skills are Project & Program Management, Production (Processing, Packaging & Utilities) & Cost Management, New Product & Business Development, Maintenance & Reliability Engineering.

In his previous role as Business Operations & Development Director in South Africa, he specialized in Project / Program Management services, Business development around engineering solutions and management consulting (process development / optimization). He has executed project and program management services to first tier multinational companies as well as engineering solutions to improve performance and cost.

Phil Colquhoun

Phil Colquhoun

Phil Colquhoun is a Chartered Engineer and holds the position of Director of Projects. During more than 20 years of work at Lorien, he was responsible for the successful implementation of numerous, multi-sector projects carried out during this period.

The functions performed by him are most often Project Manager, Program Manager and coordinator of the work of project teams in the Lorien office in Great Britain.

His competences include the bakery and dairy industry, production of snacks, semi-finished food products as well as pharmaceuticals and industrial products. His investments often required the use of quick project management techniques in order to meet the client's schedule expectations and were carried out in operating plants, without disrupting production. The completed investments include multi-sector projects (construction facilities and production lines) as well as projects that included only construction investments or only process installations.

Phil also has experience in the supply chain and logistics facilities, bakery, snack food, clothing and household goods industries.

Prior to joining Lorien, Phil gained experience managing production in the FMCG sector and leading a military engineering team for the British Army.

Recently, Phil has been working on the following assignments:

  • Managing a project related to the implementation and validation of a pharmaceutical dosing installation for an international, multi-sector client.
  • Implementation of a number of projects increasing production efficiency and improving its quality for a customer in the food industry.
  • Transfer of the complete production installation between two plants, including the implementation of a new facility at the target location.
  • Leading a venture to create national distribution centers for a large retail company.

John Dilley

Senior Project Manager

John Dilley

John Dilley is the Senior Project Manager. He joined Lorien in 1999 as an engineer dealing with the design of processes and their feeding with technological media.

John has acquired extensive knowledge and experience in the field of food and beverage production.

He was involved in the production technologies of products such as snacks, breakfast products, meat, vegetables, cereal products, oils, soups, dairy products, carbonated and concentrated drinks, mineral water and beer. He has also managed projects for clients in the pharmaceutical industry, the production of specialty chemicals, including their distribution.

Posiadł gruntowną wiedzę w zakresie procesów technologicznych i ich realizacji poprzez swoje zaangażowanie w tworzenie nowych wyrobów, opracowywanie planów rozwojowych firm produkcyjnych (dla jednej lub wielu lokalizacji), programów inwestycji kapitałowych oraz wdrożenie kompletnych projektów technicznych, począwszy od studiów wykonalności po rozruch instalacji.   • Program Manager for a customer from the food industry, supervising many projects for the needs of his production plants, so that the related ones meet the expectations of achieving the same economic goal.
  • Modernization and redesign of the technological water supply and distribution system for a large brewery in order to double its production volume.
  • Coordination of the project and construction management of the task of replacing the oat dryer for a breakfast cereal producer. The work was carried out in the vicinity of an adjacent furnace, which was used for ongoing production at all times.

Stephen Brown

Account Director

Stephen Brown

Stephen Brown at Lorien is an Account Director and is responsible for managing large, multi-discipline engineering projects mainly in the food and beverage industry. He is also a Key Account Lead for a global snack producer.

In the food and beverage manufacturing sector, Stephen has successfully led a multi-million dollar investment implementation. He was responsible for overall project management, including budget supervision, implementation schedule and coordination of the work of multi-sector teams in the field of electrical installations, automation, production technology, packaging, process media and construction design. Stephen has particular experience in developing feasibility studies and concepts in the initial stages of an investment.

He has extensive experience in practical construction management, especially in areas where hygiene aspects are of particular importance, as well as in the implementation of investments in functioning food production facilities.

Stephen has spent more than 20 years with Lorien out of his 30-plus-year professional career. Previously, he worked, among others, as the head of the packaging department in one of the leading companies in this industry. In this function, he was responsible for managing the packaging line design department.

Most recently, Stephen worked as:

  • Program Manager for a customer of the food industry, supervising numerous projects in many production plants, so that they jointly lead to the intended business goal.
  • Managing projects related to snack batch packaging installations for a global customer in multiple locations in the UK. It was a large-scale undertaking that resulted from an analysis of the network of production plants and the need to close one of the factories.

Matthew Hidderley

Director of Sales & Marketing

Matthew Hidderley

Matthew, as Director of Sales & Marketing, is responsible for activities related to development and new sales prospects as well as cooperation with key clients from the FMCG sector. The projects acquired by him are implemented by multi-disciplinary engineering teams in the food and beverage production and advanced technologies sectors. Its customers have manufacturing operations in the UK, Europe and North America.

Matthew has an MBA and 20 years of experience in sales and marketing development and operations.
He is responsible for cooperation with clients and their internal management structures at all levels. She deals with the entire process of establishing contacts with clients and developing relationships with them.

He has completed various and complex CapEx investment projects, from small consulting tasks such as verification of technological projects, CAD documentation, ensuring compliance with PUWER / CE requirements, to the modernization of complete production lines and the implementation of large projects worth many millions of pounds, such as:

  • Master plan development plans (for a single plant or the entire company)
  • Removal of bottlenecks in technological processes and production lines
  • Increasing the scale and efficiency of technological processes
  • Technological reviews and searching for new technical solutions
  • Equipment replacement
  • Initial Concepts (FEED)
  • Investment implementation strategy

Chris Bullock

Chris Bullock

Chris Bullock holds the position of Director of Engineering and leads the team dealing with packaging and packaging techniques for finished products. He has over 20 years of experience in the implementation of investments and specializes in packaging engineering, confectioning and project management. He managed multi-sector projects for "Blue Chip" clients in various sectors, including in brewing, the production of non-alcoholic beverages and other food products.

From concept to implementation, he supports the work of his team, being responsible for innovative technical solutions that meet the needs of our clients

Chris has a proven track record of achievements in his specialty and leads Lorien's projects across all key market sectors. He graduated as a mechanical engineer and, through years of practice, gained extensive knowledge of designing and manufacturing lines for packing and confectioning, in particular about fast packing or bottling systems, reloading, automation and storage of containers / packages. He specializes in developing solutions that take into account both the production and operational needs of the client as well as commercial goals.

The last completed tasks include:

  • A new line for PET bottles - offer design, supplier selection and order fulfillment, project implementation planning and technical supervision over the implementation
  • Feasibility study and concept for bottling line - implementation of a strategic task in Great Britain for a global brewing group.
  • Rationalization of the canning line - upgrade of two existing canning lines to achieve a 30% increase in efficiency and supplement the line with new secondary packaging and final operations equipment.

Adrian Nicholls

Engineering Manager – Media i zrównoważony rozwój

Adrian Nicholls

Adrian Nicholls leads a team at Lorien responsible for designing the infrastructure of technology media, facility installations and dealing with sustainable development issues. He has extensive experience in the design, implementation and commissioning of media installations and investments related to renewable energy.

He is an experienced engineer who has performed various functions in projects related to technological processes in the field of media supply. The scope of responsibility included both the preparation of feasibility studies and the design of transmission and distribution installations as well as implementation management up to the start-up stage. These were new investments as well as modernization of existing installations.

His notable achievements include restoration and reconstruction of infrastructure after the Canterbury earthquake in New Zealand, optimization of the technological process of incineration plants in Great Britain, implementation of cogeneration installations in wastewater treatment plants and increasing efficiency through modernizations in food and drink production plants.

Adrian's skills include feasibility studies, executive design of utilities installations, process calculations (mass and energy balances, pump selection, etc.), management and coordination of implementation to the stage of commissioning and optimization of the installation. His team designs heating and ventilation systems, controlled atmosphere rooms, cold and hot water installations, gas networks, laboratory gas installations, chilled water and cooling systems, and wastewater treatment.

The projects concern both commercial and industrial investments as well as public historic buildings. The team also implements projects related to the production of renewable energy (from biomass and waste) and the construction of biogas installations.

Some of Adrian's recent projects include:

  • Modernization of a large cooling system, including chilled water, for an international brewery, enabling a significant increase in the efficiency of the brewhouse.
  • Modernization (design and investment management) of utilities in the production plant of a leading UK breakfast cereal producer.
  • Conducting an inventory and technical review of process media installations at the plant of a leading British manufacturer of beauty products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Tim Redfern

Tim Redfern is the Engineering Manager and heads the electrical and automation design department at Lorien's UK office, including assigning tasks and managing projects to achieve the assumed technical goals. He is a certified engineer and a member of the Electrotechnical Institute.

He has worked on many and varied projects related to technological processes, packaging, confectioning or bottling in the brewing, food, snack and beverage sectors. In this way, he developed practical knowledge about automation systems, electrical installations as well as investment management and construction management skills.

Tim and his team carry out projects that include one or more of the following tasks:

  • User Requirements Specifications (URS)
  • Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
  • Software Design Specifications (SDS)
  • Architecture of PLC and data networks
  • PLC systems
  • SCADA systems
  • HV and MV power supply systems

In addition, Tim led the development of a power infrastructure and process automation recovery plan after fire damage at a food manufacturing facility.

Recently, Tim has worked on the following projects:

  • Snack bulk packaging facilities for a global customer at multiple locations in the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium. These were projects of great value and complexity, resulting from the implementation of new products into production and the technologies used.
  • Medium and low voltage switchgear systems for a customer producing food semi-finished products.
  • Change of the control system based on Siemens S5 series PLC controllers to S7 at the request of a large British bakery for cookies and biscuits.
  • Managing the design of electrical installations, control and measurements for the expansion and modernization of technology in a large plant oil processing plant.

Tony Reynolds

Tony Reynolds leads a team of engineers at Lorien responsible for ensuring compliance with safety requirements. This team specializes in obtaining CE marking for complex installations, risk assessment and machine safety, approvals and zoning according to SRP / CS, HAZOP, ATEX & DSEAR in the field of explosive atmospheres (dusts, gases and vapors) in new and existing.

He joined Lorien in 2007 with over 16 years of prior experience working in compliance and approval. He has worked for reputable certification bodies such as TÜV Rheinland and BSI (British Standards Institution) and for commercial companies, including Pitney Bowes.

He was also involved in the approval and certification processes for devices and products on a global scale. He has enormous and unique knowledge in the field of approvals and legal regulations in the world. He has worked for Lorien clients, incl. in Great Britain, Germany, USA, Canada, Russia, India, South Africa, Indonesia, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Slovenia, Slovakia, Belgium, Poland and the Netherlands.

Tony also conducts technical training for clients and in-house courses on security compliance issues.

Recently he has been involved in the following tasks:

  • For a customer in the food industry, as a safety compliance program manager, he oversaw numerous safety-related projects at all production sites. The work resulted in assessments and reports prepared in accordance with the requirements of uniform standards.
  • Conducting training in the field of compliance with safety requirements, including machine safety (PUWER and CE marking), explosive atmospheres (DSEAR and ATEX) and safety at the construction site (British CDM regulations) for a specialist chemical company serving the automotive sector.
  • Inspections of potentially explosive areas and preparation of a report on non-compliance with safety requirements in the production facilities of a global manufacturer of household chemicals. The inspections were performed at operating plants in India and Indonesia, and the design documentation of the new facility in the Middle East was verified for safety.

Duncan Johnstone

Engineering Manager – Packaging

Duncan Johnstone

Duncan Johnstone is the Engineering Manager for Packaging and has been with the Lorien business for 14 years. He currently leads the packaging department covering the packaging and shipping process (warehouse, logistics, automation, line performance improvements) together with acting as Project Manager on strategic projects.

Coming from a background in Special Purpose Machinery design, Duncan joined the business as a packaging engineer in 2005. With extensive experience of packaging line design and implementation, he has led multi-disciplined projects across a range of business sectors including brewing, soft drinks, cereals and snack foods.

Outside of his core technical skills, Duncan has excellent knowledge of current Project Management and Health & Safety standards. He is experienced in implementing complex projects on site, working around clients production requirements, to deliver projects safely and on time.

Recent project examples include: -

  • Feasibility study looking at options for upgrading an existing line together with new packaging line concepts through a stage gate process covering Statement of Requirements (SOR), Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), 2D & 3D drawings, specifications through to installation and commissioning
  • Upgrade of a complete packing hall, to introduce new packaging formats, whilst maintaining clients production
  • Relocation of packing lines between client sites
  • Installation of new machinery to boost line output
  • Line performance audit to calculate the line efficiency in terms of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)

Stephen Hodgetts

Health & Safety Manager

Stephen Hodgetts

Stephen started his safety career within the PetroChemical sector back in 2005 and now has an extensive suite of qualifications and Institute memberships including NEBOSH NGC & NCC; SPA PetroChem, Food & Drink & Supervisor; CSCS; IPAF; BAND; TechIOSH; AIIRSM and AIEMA.

Following a nine year stint as the Health & Safety, Engineering and Training Advisor for a Shell Retail & Calor Gas Joint Venture interest, Stephen joined Lorien in July 2014 as Senior Health & Safety Site Manager.

Experience has been gained in the Food & Drink, Brewing, FMCG, Heavy Engineering and Pharmaceutical Industries and Stephen's final site project was for a leading cereal manufacturer, managing 1200 Contractors working over 230,000 hours across 2800 Permits.

In 2017, Stephen gained promotion to the Assistant Health & Safety Manager, becoming firmly involved with our OHSAS18001 Safety Management System, RoSPA Accreditation, development of our New Starter Induction and co-writer of our new Safety Management System. Stephen also has overseas experience working in Australia, UAE Abu Dhabi, Malta, Holland and Belgium.

Recent examples of Stephen's work include the following:

  • Collaboratively writing a complete Health & Safety CDM Management System for a new Client, then training their key personnel and rolling out a series of supportive audits to ensure compliance.
  • Conducting H&S and CDM Training to our clients making them fully aware of their legal obligations under CDM and how to address them. This will include Contractor On-boarding; RA / MS Review and Permit Issue; Site Inspections and System Audits; Accident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis; Safety Communications and Key Performance Indicators; Safety Cards and Site Discipline.
  • A complete review of internal safety processes when preforming the role of Principal Contractor at Client sites.
