Waste SectorMaterials Recycling Facility Design Plant Utilities'Waste' has become a major issue within the developed world. Over 400 million tonnes of waste is produced in the UK each year, of which around 300 million tonnes is from - amongst other sources - agriculture, mines and quarrying activities. The remaining 100 million tonnes is generated from households and commercial/ industrial operations. In 1998/99 a total of 28 million tonnes of household waste was produced, a figure which is growing at approximately three percent per annum. Of this, over 80 per cent ended up in landfill sites. During 2000/01 only 10% of household waste was recycled or composted. The piece of recent waste management legislation with perhaps the biggest impact on local authorities is the EU Landfill Directive, which requires a reduction in biodegradable municipal waste to 35 per cent of 1995 levels by 2020. In 2001 the UK Government introduced statutory targets in England to increase local authority recycling and composting of household waste from its current level to 25% by 2005/6, and to reduce the landfilling of commercial and industrial waste to 85% of 1998 levels. These targets are being tackled with the creation of Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) across the UK. There are currently over 60, however it is estimated that there is a need for at least 200 more to cope with current levels of waste. Lorien Engineering Solutions is using its project management and waste expertise to advise companies establishing such facilities.
Lorien has designed one of the biggest waste materials recycling facilities in the UK in conjunction with a Waste solutions company, designed to handle 75,000 tonnes of waste per annum. |
